"Compensation for X number of Gs if a Zaku is traveling at Y speed is –" Ellis tapped the eraser of her pencil against the tip of her nose. "– nonsense. The question only calls it a Zaku. No number. And that makes a big difference." She looked to Ranaleau, seated at the half-desk next to hers. "Did you catch that, Shade? I found a typo in the manual."

"Because this manual is by the G Gen Team –" Shade stuck his pencil behind his left ear. "– not by the Zeons. Our knowledge is broad, but not deep. And that –" He closed his copy of the manual. "– is because our engineers have to put it all together by bits and bobs as the Carry Base goes from mission to mission. They have no time to run all the tests. No time to edit the manuals, either. Everything's temporary, and then the temporary becomes permanent." He laughed. "Same goes for most of us pilots."

Ellis sighed. "Understanding all of our machines will make us good pilots. Learning from incomplete and unedited materials doesn't lead to understanding." She looked up at the ceiling, frustration plain upon her features. "I'm starting to sound like the Captain." Then she paused. "Damn it. Again! Okay. Do you want to say it with me this time, Shade?"

He smirked. "Of course. I'm a big believer in team harmony. ... Ready?"

She took a deep breath, then they both said, at the same time, pitching their voices downwards, "Why, Lieutenant Claude, which of our Captains do you mean?"

Ranaleau then answered, "I'm assuming you mean Captain Teegel. He's usually the one who says things like that. Not that Captain Char wouldn't, of course, but it's not his normal method." He turned his head slightly to crack his neck. "He's more hands-on."

"Maybe he should edit the manual, then?" Ellis sighed. "He wouldn't, though, would he? He'd delegate it to Captain Challia." She closed her eyes. "One of the Captain Challias."

"There really needs to be a study of multiple copies of the same person being in the same place at the same time. I don't know who'd handle that, though. The ship psychologist?" He frowned. "Do we even have one? You'd think we would, what with people like that 'Blood' guy on board. Maybe they would've screened him out?"

"If the Science Department doesn't have a budget, I'm sure Medical doesn't have one, either. We have what we have, and we've got to make it work, like always." She looked at him. "Are you volunteering to lead the study, then, Shade? Be a scientist and all that?"

He laughed. "The only thing I'm qualified to study is Billy's losing streak. I could publish a paper on that and retire –" The smile left his eyes. "– if we ever get back, I mean."

She patted him on the back. "I'll buy you the white coat and glasses myself."

END.
