The nightmare started like all the others—girls running, hunted, slipping through her fingers like ash. Names she didn’t know, faces that warped and melted into one another, dissolving too fast.
But then, the pattern shifted. Suddenly she was in a dim stone cave where the air felt thick and saturated with indistinct whispers of a dozen voices. She looked around the cavern, spotting symbols carved into the stone walls; it seemed chiseled from memory, though she’d never been there before.
Twirling around, she found Spike kneeling there, a soft glow pulsing from beneath his sternum. A spark trapped in amber.

She froze. Confused. Scared, even. She hadn’t seen him since…
But this was a dream—a Slayer dream—she knew it.
She braced herself and took a step forward. “Spike?” she called.
He didn’t answer, but his eyes caught hers—and for one fleeting moment she saw the spark of pain and sorrow in the depths of his gaze.
He reached a trembling hand toward her, wordlessly, as if pleading for help.
She took another tentative step toward him, but instead she was yanked back to reality, waking up alone in her tangled sheets, pulse galloping, mouth dry, hand curled over her chest.
