Years later, Hans Dietrich still remembered his early thoughts on the North African desert. The first thing he’d noticed when he’d stepped off the plane was the heat. The next thing was the dryness, which was very different from the wetter coasts he’d been accustomed to, growing up in northern Germany. The third thing was the first few easy victories he’d had. And the fourth thing (he would not let it get above the early days) was the Rat Patrol itself.
