Welcome to Sunnydale; that’s what was on the sign on the approach into town. It was cheerful and, supposedly, welcoming, but it lacked a certain honestly. Maybe that was why Spike smashed the car straight through it. Or maybe it was simply because he was drunk out of his mind and couldn’t see straight.

“Home, sweet home.”

Yeah, right. He came to Sunnydale in the first place to make his mark on the vampire community, but the welcome he’d gotten wasn’t especially warm. Not that it had mattered back then, because he’d had Dru at his side, and he’d been full of big plans. First he’d kill the Slayer, then he’d take over Sunnydale. He’d be the big boss vampire, live it up while his lackeys did all the hard work.

Only it hadn’t worked out that way, killing the Slayer had proved harder than expected, and one after another, all his plans had fallen apart until eventually Dru had left him. It wasn’t fair!

Now he was back, not expecting the welcome to be any warmer this time than the last, but that was okay; he wasn’t looking to be made welcome, he’d just come to get back what was his, starting with his self-respect.

If he was going to get everything back the way it had been before, then he couldn’t think of a better place to start. Sunnydale was where things had gone wrong so logically that was where the solution to all his problems must be. Well, it made sense to his alcohol sodden brain.

He needed to win Dru back, needed her to love him again, so he’d start at the magic shop, get himself a love potion that would have Dru grovelling in front of him, begging for his forgiveness. Yeah, that would work.

The End

You know, I have often seen the little boy inside Spike. But researching genders over the last couple of years, and the differences in men and women, I have to admit this drabble has given me a whole further layer of appreciation of that psychology understanding.

Spike went from his mom (and an attempt at Cecily) to Drusilla to Joyce and Dawn at various times and ultimately to Buffy.

Angel moved from being underneath his father's oppression to Darla, then to Buffy, and eventually Cordelia.

In each, we see very strong women helping them to "progress". One has to wonder, then, what would have happened had they not had the females to lead them?

IMNSHO. ;)

I'm not sure Darla's influence can be considered positive, I think Liam was very easily led by a pretty face when he was a lad, but many of the other women provided much more sensible guidance, even if it was only the men wanting to to better in order to gain their approval.

Thank you!

Which is exactly why I put "progress" in quotes. Very well aware that Darla, and also Drusilla, were not exactly positive impacts. :) But they DID bring both further along the path of manhood, whether for bad or good!

True, bth of them matured, maybe not in a good way at first but it all contributed.

YES! Very much so... Again not in a good way, AT ALL, but if they had not met Darla and Drusilla, what would have become of their lives? Would Angelus have simply remained a drunk? What would have happened to William when his mum eventually died? We have to make partnerships in this world, alliances if nothing more, to ever progress in any true way whatsoever...

Liam would have stayed the way he was, drinking and whoring, probably would have got himself killed in a bar fight. William, he would have been a pale, starving poet, looking for a sponsor, lol.

Instead, Liam became Angel, grew up and started taking responsibility for his actions, while William became Spike and rebelled against everything.

Until he fell for Buffy... :)

I actually couldn't agree more! And LOL -- I like your terminology there with the sponsor! ;)

I don't think that really changed Spike much. He was still rebellious, thoughtless, and self-involved. I love Spike as a character, but even with his soul restored he was dangerous to know.

Things seldom work out as planned of course.

Thank you!
