Summary: Learning to sleep



Maedhros could sleep nearly anywhere: moments of light reverie with ears awake and hands busy with some useful, repetitive task, surrounded by brothers and cousins and people he was responsible for -- or when torment paused, the time for actions was not yet -- snatches of rest; to longer stretches of deeper reverie, even a kind of sleep as Dwarves and Men would call it, relatively safe, for some definition of safe; to minutes or hours of deep repose, and everything in between, alone or in company, out under the sky, a roof, deep stone, sitting, standing, lying, (suspended from one wrist...).

Fingon, on the other hand, had never been particularly good at sleeping, not even as an infant, and the Ice only made things worse. He had trained himself over time to deliberately invoke reverie, especially the momentary kind, had specific memories that were restful even if not deeply refreshing, likewise songs, scents, textures and suchlike that were helpful. Yet all too often, deep reverie and true sleep evaded him.
Except when he was with Maedhros. Curled together, held, warm, safe, present together was best, but in the same room, in the compass of each other's thought was more than sufficient.
