The shout went up: "Balrogs! Balrogs advancing to the center position, hewing the vanguard like grass. My king, they are coming directly for you!"

The fifth day of the fifth battle, the battle they were pinning all their hopes upon. They could win this. They must win this; they were throwing everything they had and more at the foe. They had faced every onslaught so far, though too few monsters had been defeated by far too many people.

Balrogs now. A phalanx of them, led no doubt by Gothmog their captain.

Fingon's armor already sparked and shone, piercingly bright despite the wear and grime of unremitting battle, Now it began to coruscate, as his fea came outwardly alight, beacon, torch, dazzling blue-white light against the darkness.

The lesser balrogs quailed before him, fires pale, whips unfocused, and were cut down by the High King and his Household, like the greater and lesser orcs they had faced, wolves and wargs and dire, twisted creatures.

Gothmog himself stood forward, striding through the remnant of his troops. Even he blinked and winced away from the light of Fingon's fea. But light and hope, skill and valor were not enough against that hate-spawned foe.
