She didn't hear the approach. Too far down, too deep, only the sound of her own pain between her and the wall. Her head hurt inside and out, and she could feel her face was as cold and wet as her dress.

Then light, and the sound of a voice she thought she would never hear again.

"Mom?" she said. It was no more than a whisper. "Is that really you?"

She woke then, as she always did. She knew it couldn't be real. Why would her mother be the one to find her? That just wasn't possible.

Only one person could do that. Even if she couldn't bring herself to say his name, she could allow herself to dream about that, and let herself slip back to sleep.

Maybe one day that dream would come true.
