Of Waters All


The under-sea colors were astonishing. Ulmo's realm was full of light and movement, flashes of vibrance and iridescence, shadows revealed by glimmers of eyes and fins and swirling water. Indeed, all water was of Ulmo's purview: rain and sea-spray and snowflakes as much as the ocean deeps and swift rivers. His was the grinding ice of the Helcaraxë and the sulfurous geysers that scalded the unwary, the treacherous marshes and the slow drips that sculpted the Glittering Caves. Let Manwë have the Air; water was everywhere in Arda, from the aether wherein the Sun and Moon spun to the very depths of the earth.  And best of all, Water resisted the devices and desires of the Enemy, refusing him place, bending not to his will, washing away his defilements. And Ulmo was implacably Melkor's foe.
