There was nothing like getting another tattoo, especially one that represented power. Symbology was a science, but the tattoos that it required? That was an art. It took a lot to make the same basic symbol that an artist has done a thousand times before and still make it look like something new, something that a wizard would change their robes to show off.

There’s nothing that requires more trust than that - trust that the person who’s giving you the tattoo knows what they’re doing, and that they’re going to do it right. This isn’t something you can make jokes about - people paint fake crests on their skin all the time, just for fun or practice, but heavens help anyone who dared to put one of those tattoos on anyone else. Pariah was not a strong enough word for someone who’d do that to someone else. Being asked to give someone else a tattoo was a real honor.

Like every wizard, Celine wonders sometimes if anyone will ever ask her to give them one of their tattoos. She has practiced again and again, first with ink and paper, then later with leather and needles; her mother and father both say that she’s learning extremely quickly. Working on a real, living person, though, that would be harder. But she’d enjoy the challenge, if she ever got the chance.
