Spike’s vision blurred as he stumbled through Sunnydale’s alleys, the tattered blanket wrapped tightly around him failing to provide the warmth he desperately craved and barely shielding him from the unforgiving sunlight.
He hadn’t been able to feed since he’d fled that soddin’ commando lab and a gnawing hunger clawed at his insides. His throat was parched, his lips dry and cracked, and the thought of blood consumed him. He’d give anything to sink his fangs into warm, tender flesh and finally quench his insatiable thirst, but they’d done something to him in that lab, leaving him starved and helpless.

Unable to feed on his own, weakened by the lack of blood in his system, rejected by Harmony, and hunted like an animal by the bloody commandos who’d already captured him upon his return to Sunnydale, his only hope was—once again—for him to turn to his sworn enemy: the Slayer.
Defying the merciless light of day, he made his way through the city as each step felt heavier than the last one; he would trade info about the commandos and their underground lab for a shelter and a pint of blood.
And if that failed, he was prepared to beg.
