Fandom: The Life You Save May Be Your Own
Summary: A couple of lines on Lucynell and her mother.
Notes: So, I read The Life You Save May Be Your Own by Flannery O’Conner for a class, and wanted to branch out of my current fandoms for once. But, I don’t know how to really write Southern dialect, due to lack of exposure. I doubt I'll write for the fandom again, but can I have a tag for it, please? TW for ableism.

“Lucynell, you’re my sunshine, baby,” her mother whispered to her infant daughter, like she had so many times, despite Lucynell never responding. I’ve prayed so many times that she’d respond, Lucynell thought. Father Murray doesn’t know why she’s not responding, either.

When Lucynell was older, and still her daughter couldn’t hear or talk, Lucynell said to her husband, after he raised the idea of institutionalizing her, “She’s still our sunshine. If we sent her away…” Thankfully, that was the last time her husband brought that up, although Father Murray had mentioned it to her briefly, after telling her that Lucynell wouldn’t be able to have First Communion.
