Dee cradled the steaming takeaway cup in both hands, blowing on the contents to cool it to a drinkable temperature. He wasn’t sure why he was bothering; it was so cold out, chances were, the coffee would be frozen solid in a few minutes. Still, while it was hot it was more than welcome; he could feel the heat seeping through his leather gloves into his half-frozen hands, thawing his fingers until they almost ached. Warmth radiating from the surface of the drink warmed his face too, and he risked a cautious sip. Burning his tongue would be a small price to pay for getting some of that warmth into him.

Beside him, hunched inside his winter coat, Ryo had his nose almost buried in his own cup, breathing in the fragrant steam until he could drink without scalding his insides.

“Shouldn’t be this damned cold in November,” Dee mumbled, taking another sip.

Amazingly, despite having his coat hood pulled up over a woollen beanie, Ryo still heard him. His ears must be as sharp as his eyes.

“Global warming,” he replied, glancing at Dee with a wry grin. “Or more accurately, climate change.”

“Yeah, ‘cause there’s nothin’ warm about the weather right now. Coffee’s good though.”

“I don’t care what it tastes like as long as it’s hot. Not that it’ll stay that way for long in this wind.” Ryo slurped noisily from his cup, making Dee snicker.

“You’re pickin’ up bad manners from Bikky.”

“It’s hot.”

“Good an excuse as any. Think I’m gettin’ a second cup when I’ve finished this one.” Through careful sipping he’d already somehow reduced the contents by half.

“Count me in. You can buy the next round.”

“Fine with me.”

They both fell silent then, concentrating on their drinks. Dee finished his first, but waited patiently until Ryo lowered his cup, looking into it with a vague air of disappointment as if he couldn’t quite believe it was all gone.

“Gimme that.” Dee whisked the cup from Ryo’s fingers and dumped it with his own in a nearby trash bin, before turning to his lover and cupping Ryo’s face in his gloved hands, letting the heat that had seeped into the leather from his coffee soak into Ryo’s cold skin.

“Oh, that feels nice.”

“Bet this’ll feel nicer.” Warm lips pressed against Ryo’s in a coffee-flavoured kiss. Cold weather had its good points.

The End
