Harry Potter: Logic puzzle: Weasley Travels

  • Mar. 1st, 2012 at 12:28 AM
Title: Weasley Travels
Fandom: Harry Potter
Rating: G
Length: 375 words
Content notes: none
Summary: The five youngest Weasleys leave Mrs. Weasley a note telling her where they've gone for the day, but with a twist. (If you aren't familiar with this type of puzzle, scroll down to the bottom for instructions.)

Puzzle )
Title: Light the Day
Fandom: Star Trek Enterprise
Rating: PG
Length: 400 words
Content notes: AU based on the episode "E2"
Pairing: Jonathan Archer/Malcolm Reed
Author notes: This is an AU story that stands alone, though it could be considered a possible follow-up to Unsettled. It takes place ten years after Enterprise returns to Earth from the Delphic Expanse and makes reference to the Season 3 episodes "Azati Prime" and "E2". Jonathan and Malcolm have a long-established relationship; this is Jonathan's voice. The title is a reference to the lyrics quoted from "May It Be" - Enya.
Summary: A lingering question answered.

Multifandom: Rec Set: Worldbuilding

  • Mar. 1st, 2012 at 8:39 AM
I've always loved AUs, and although they don't have to take place in an elaborately imagined and unfamiliar world to make me happy, it is kind of like stumbling across a free-pies-and-puppies store when they do. Building a fictional world -- whether you're creating it from the ground up or trying to recreate it from research and memory -- is not an easy thing to do. I struggle with it myself, and I have all kinds of admiration for those who can manage it adeptly enough that their effort is invisible.

These are some of the best examples of fannish worldbuilding I can remember coming across in various fandoms over the years. Some are recent and some are not.

Five recs beneath the cut )

Also, because so many of them came up in my searches for fanworks to rec, here are a few resources for those of you who might be doing some worldbuilding of your own: )

I know there are probably plenty of examples of great worldbuilding I'm missing (and probably plenty of good resources, too). Please, leave your own related recs and links in the comments!
Title: Station: The Rose
Fandom: Revolutionary Girl Utena & LOST (crossover/fusion)
Rating: G
Length/size: 1800 words / 250px x 250px
Content notes: none
Author notes: I'm still not sure if this is a fusion, such that Utena and Anthy are transposed to the DHARMA Initiative on the island in LOST, or if it's multiversal crossover, where post-series, Utena and Anthy meet again. In the Initiative, on the island. :D?

Summary: Hybridized roses multiplied the wild rose's five simple petals into ornate, ruffled variations. This station will seek to explore chance, hybridize and disturb fate.

Original Story: Nowhere near home

  • Mar. 1st, 2012 at 12:12 PM

Title:  Nowhere near home
Fandom: None; Original story
Rating: G
Length: 1259 words
Content Notes: No warnings apply
Author Notes: With a prompt and no fandom specified, my brain defaults to this. Peter was my first roleplaying character, as well as the one character who has been with me most consistently for the last 16 years. When he's not busy playing with me, he's living about 800 years in the future. A few years ago I started chronicling his life in a series of short episodes. Here's one of them.
Summary:  Peter ponders a sudden and highly unwelcome change to his living situation.

Nero Wolfe: fanfic: Lucky Breaks

  • Mar. 1st, 2012 at 1:20 PM

Title: Lucky Breaks
Author: [livejournal.com profile] hardboiledbaby
Fandom: Nero Wolfe (Rex Stout)
Characters: Archie, Saul, Orrie, Fred
Rating: PG
Length: 1,122
Content notes: none
Summary: A game of eight-ball reveals some interesting things. Written to the [livejournal.com profile] fan_flashworks "anywhere but here" challenge, and this prompt given to me long, long ago by [livejournal.com profile] non_canon: "I would love to see some gen of Archie, Saul, Fred, and Orrie being friends. Bonus points if you work in the idea of them being like a family." Nearly everything I know about pool I learned online, so please pardon any faux pas I've made in that area (or blame Wikipedia *g*).

Title: neverlandwendytardismarypoppins
Fandom: Mary Poppins, Peter Pan, Doctor Who
Rating: G
Content notes: none
Artist notes: I don't know why, but I'm convinced Mary Poppins is the Doctor. I think it's the bottomless carpet bag and the coming and going, and the general awesomeness.
Summary: Mary Poppins is the Doctor and visits Wendy in Neverland

Portal: Fanfiction: Just Past Midnight

  • Mar. 1st, 2012 at 6:23 PM
Title: Just Past Midnight
Fandom: Portal
Rating: T for Teen
Length/size: 464 words
Content notes: none
Author notes: Portal fanfic! This such a great game, haha. GLaDOS is kind of tricky to write (and capitalize properly) but practice makes perfect, right?
Summary: Forget about seeing the sun. Right now, Chell would settle for a good watch. (GLaDOS and Chell have a rather one-sided talk.)

There's no such thing as time anymore. )

Challenge 4: Stages

  • Mar. 1st, 2012 at 8:39 PM
It's March 1st! Our new challenge is :

STAGES

As always, we leave it to you to decide what that means: maybe your characters are going through a stage, or maybe they're performing on one. Or maybe this is a western AU and they're stage coach drivers! Be creative, is the thing I mean to be telling you here.

Each work created for this challenge should be posted as a new entry to the comm. Posting starts now and continues up until the challenge ends at 4 p.m. PST on March 10th. No sign-up required.

Don't worry about tagging. Mods will tag your work with fandom, media and challenge. When you've posted entries to three consecutive challenges, you will earn a name tag, and we'll go back and tag all your previous entries with your name.

As always, all kinds of fanworks in all fandoms are welcome. Please have a look at our guidelines before you play. If you have any questions or concerns, don't hesitate to contact a mod. And if you have any suggestions for future challenges, you can leave them in the comments of this post. \o/
