It had only been a quick shopping trip, Will told himself. Hannibal could work wonders with just vegetables, but was prone to sulking on such occasions.

There were no scuff marks on the porch (last Wednesday). No bicycle (three weeks ago) or van (December) parked anywhere in the lonely lane up to their house. No discarded post bag (October) or political leaflet (May, August, two weeks ago last Thursday). No blood smears to greet him inside the hallway (too many times to mention).

Just the smell of breakfast sizzling.

"I told you they would deliver, Will," Hannibal said, and smiled.
