Summary: Zeke can't stand it any longer how Delilah treats Casey all the time
„Casey, wait! We need to talk about prom.“
Zeke rolled his eyes when he noticed Deliah rushing over to the parking lot. She ignored him, as ever, and turned to Casey.
„I guess you don't have invited someone so far?“
„Ähm...“
While Casey was looking for an answer, Zeke smirked.
„What? Your date bailed on you?“
Deliah's eyes turned cold when she started at him.
„Of course not. I need a photographer. The best one.“
She smiled at Casey and the boy shrugged, obviously feeling uncomfortable.
„Sorry, Del, I can't. I won't...“
„What do you mean, you can't? C'mon, Casey, you can do me this favor. You will be there all alone, so where is the problem?“
„Who says that he will be there all alone?“
Delilah huffed surprised, threw a sharp glance at Casey, who had slightly blushed at Zeke words. Could it be that she had missed something? But Casey had never been a big heartbreaker. Actually she had been his first girlfriend, and it wasn't him who had made the first step. He was nice, without any question; had bought her flowers and this cheap ring for her birthday but it had never been great passion. His kisses almost shy, he had barely dared to touch her at first. She had always preferred more experienced boys, Stan, the quarterback from the school's football team; he was a guy who knew what he wanted.
But after the alien incidence at school the world called Casey a hero, there were interviews and TV shows and parties, all just because of him. Of course, he would have preferred not to enjoy all the fame he got, but she had to convince him, that this was the biggest chance of his life he would ever get. And she had enjoyed it to be the girl at his side.
Then the fame had started to fade away, and it was nothing left what still connected them. One day they both came to the understanding that it was better to go separate ways. But the thought that Casey was together with someone else only three months after they did break up bothered her anyway.
„You have a girlfriend?“
He blushed even more, and she thought how embarrassing this behavior still was; he would never change. But Zeke put his arm around his shoulder.
„He has a boyfriend. A guy who cares about him and not treats him like a lap-dog.“
Delilah stared at them with open mouth. It didn't often happen that something shocked her that much.
„This...“ she stammered.
„This is just a disgusting joke.“
But she noticed the strange glance in Casey's eyes and Zeke's protecting gesture and deep inside she knew the truth.
„You can't be gay,“ she spat.
„You were together with me!“
„He's not gay. He's bi! And he loves me in a way he did never love you. Because I'm not interested in just using him. I make him as happy as he deserves it."
„Zeke, please...“
„It's okay, Case.“
Zeke's voice was surprisingly gentle, without the usual teasing, playful undertone.
„I guess it's time for some truth. Let's face it; she never meant you but the fame you got. This is not love.
I love you, and I'm ready to tell everyone. Just some weeks and we will leave Ohio behind. New York is our future; people are not that close-minded there. But it might be fun to leave with a scandal this hellhole of town won't forget so soon.“
A thought rushed through Delilah confused mind, and she paled in panic.
„You can't ruin the prom with your coming out. It took me weeks, months even, to organize everything perfectly.“
„I can't?“
Zeke eyed her and smirked.
„Don't tell me what I can do, Delilah, I'm not one of your blind followers. But don't worry, Casey and I will spend prom day somewhere else. We are not interested in stealing your last bits of fame.
I'm sure, prom will be perfect, and everyone will praise your organizing talent. Enjoy it; it might be the last time you can shine as the brilliant cheerleader bitch, stealing everyone the show.
Just some last piece of advice. Just should better start to look for a photographer soon; otherwise, the good ones might be fully booked. And prom night might turn into a pratfall."
:::
Sometime later in Zeke's GTO; they were driving for quite a while already in silence. Finally, Zeke couldn't bear it any longer.
„Sorry,“ he murmured.
„I know we had an agreement. Maybe I should have better kept my mouth shut. But the way this bitch treats you is driving my crazy.“
Casey smiled slightly.
„It's okay, Zeke. I guess I can deal with it. After all I had to go through at school...“
He thought about all the bullying and insulting of the jocks, just because he loved art and classic novels instead of football and comics, all the years, day in, day out. But this was history. He had graduated, he would go art school, he would share an apartment with the guy he loved. Probably this was the biggest wonder. Never before he had dared to hope that his secrets dreams would ever come true.
But it happened. Zeke planned a future together with him. And today...
„You've said that you love me,“ he murmured almost inaudibly.
Zeke stopped the GTO at the roadside and turned to him.
„It was about time, I guess,“ he said.
„You've always told me that you don't believe in love. That love is the most overused word in the world.“
„Sometimes I say a lot of shit.“
Zeke eyes him seriously.
„This time I didn't. I feel like that for quite a while already.“
He bent forward to place a kiss on Casey's lips.
„You stole my heart, geek boy. And I don't mind.“
