Title: Hiding Places

Content Notes: Crime...??
Summary: Windowsills can be good hiding places if you use them properly.

The window opens over a blind alley - not exactly an enchanting view, but one that you are finding yourself far more familiar with than you would like.

You weren't expecting the town watch to be sniffing around the good doctor's home. They're easy enough to avoid for the most part, but several of them had decided to take advantage of the doctor's absence to line their own pockets, and you just happened to be in the first room that they chose to ransack. They won't find much - the more expensive bits and pieces have been tucked into your pockets, money to pay for weapons and medicine - but they might find a few things to barter with, and you'd prefer not to kill them. You can hardly claim the moral high ground.

The alley is empty, and you dearly hope that it stays that way, that no guards or thugs decide to slip away from some secret liason or illegal diversion. It might not be a catstrophe even if they do - the guards hardly ever look up in Dunwall, it seems - but you would rather not be subjected to the sound of such things. And you can never quite be sure who would be distracted enough to miss or ignore the sound of feet scraping against stone.

You've trained for years, learning such methods so that you can understand and counter the mundane assassins who came for the Empress's life. (You knew nothing about others until they appeared from nowhere, trapping you in a vortex - the mark on your hand stings at the thought, and you curse and hold on more tightly.) Recently you've used them most in your games of hide-and-seek with Emily - hanging out of windows in her tower, only to have her scold you when you climb back inside. That trick didn't work often anymore; the windows were the first place she'd checked, of late. Of course, it meant that hiding elsewhere was far simpler.

You try to stop the thought, then, listening to the sounds of the guards' conversation begin to fade in the bedroom. You hope you'll have the chance to play those games with her again.
