Fairy tales

Outside, afternoon had passed into evening and the streetlights were coming on, illuminating the traffic in its impatient stop-and-start shuffle homeward, but here, inside, in Neal's bed with the covers pulled up and the air rich with the scent of sex, there was lamplight accentuating the perfect curve of Kate's cheek and her hair spilling across Neal's chest like loose strands of midnight. He stroked her head and pressed his lips to her temple, still barely believing that she really was here with him, and not halfway to Chicago with Michael. This was how it felt not to be alone. This was pure happiness—or almost pure.

He waited until her eyelashes fanned her cheeks and her breathing evened out, and gradually, with infinite care, he started inching out her of embrace. He didn't want to—he'd die here if he could, on these rumpled, sweaty sheets with her head pillowed on his shoulder—but he couldn't risk putting it off any longer.

Before he'd got even a leg free, her hand slid up the slope of his shoulder and held him in place. "Where do you think you're going, Nick?" she murmured sleepily. Her earring moved against her jaw as she spoke. She was still wearing her earrings.

Neal froze for a split second, then forced his body to relax into her embrace, deferring to his own desires as much as her implicit request. "Nowhere. I'm staying right here."

"Good." She smiled without opening her eyes and stretched out against him.

Neal tried to calm down. She'd be asleep soon. There was still time. But his brain was on high alert now, vividly aware of his plain apartment, cluttered with incrimination: the pile of forged bonds tucked into the World Atlas on the bookshelf; the boxes of paintbrushes and ink and printing plates from old jobs; the half-finished Raphael, inspired by Neal's first meeting with the woman now lying in his arms; the research on Adler and the growing file of information on Agent Peter Burke, FBI; the hollowed-out book with its bundle of ready cash; the multiple passports Mozzie had insisted Neal acquire; the origami flower from Alex; the absence of framed photos; the bills and old IDs, the call history on his phone, even the clothes in his closet and the bottles in his makeshift wine rack felt like evidence that Neal wasn't Nick, that she shouldn't trust him.

"I love you," he breathed, so quietly she wouldn't hear, and as he said it, he accepted its implications: his fate wasn't his own. Everything hinged on Kate now, and there was nothing he could do but to make her love him back, love him so deeply that when he told her the truth, she'd still be anchored to him. She'd still believe he was a purveyor of magic, not cheap tricks. She'd still trust him with her heart in return.

As if she'd heard his silent declaration, she stirred and turned her head to kiss his neck. "You're tense. What's wrong?"

"I was going to straighten up," said Neal. "My place is a mess. I don't want you to see it like this."

"Scared I'm going to go through your stuff and find out all your secrets?" There was a lazy smile in her tone. It wasn't a threat. But it still thrilled and alarmed Neal.

"No."

"Yes, you are." She nuzzled him, then propped her chin on her hand and looked down with heavy eyes and a Sphinx expression. "I want to know all about you, Nick Halden, right down to the bones. I asked around, and no one even knows where you came from."

"Then I'll tell you," said Neal. He raised his head to kiss her, and then lay back, eyes on the ceiling, and told her stories about his life, his family, where he'd come from and where he was going, wishing with all his heart that he could be this man for her, this fictional creation, and that the stories he told were true.

Nice approach with Neal trying to hide the evidence from Kate. They really did start off on the wrong foot.

Maybe, though they did get past it. I mean, he came clean and she stuck around for a while, at least. *glares at canon for never giving us Kate's side of the story*

Thanks, you!

Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!! Oh, I love this so much! I love your young Neal, still trying to figure out who he is and who he wants to be, head over heels in love and not knowing how to deal with it or her or all the contradictions in the two lives he's trying to live at the same time. But they're both so young and happy, and he's so determined that he will find a way to make it work, and it's sweet and adorable and absolutely heartbreaking when you know what's coming. *hugs them both* Thank you so much for posting this!

*beams and beams* It's funny, isn't it, because it foreshadows all the doom, but in fact that did get past this rocky beginning: Neal came clean, and they were okay for a while there. *pets both their wee heads*

Thank you so much!! <3

There's so many points in their relationship where it should all fall apart, and yet it didn't. They survive her finding out his real identity, and the one breakup, and Neal getting arrested - it's the sort of relationship that you wouldn't expect to work nearly as well as it does. And from the small scraps of information canon gives us about her, we know she visited him in prison every week for three and a half years (and no one else did) - that's a huge thing, and a long time to wait for someone, and after she stood by him that long I don't think Neal is being unreasonable in S1 by giving her the benefit of the doubt when she's being all cryptic about everything.

And I'm still annoyed at canon for never giving a complete explanation for all the cryptic stuff. I think there's a strong case to be made, based on what we do get, that she loved him and she thought she was rescuing him from a bad situation, but the whole storyline got dropped without a conclusive answer. *sigh*

That's what fic is for, I guess. I ♥ my tragic doomed ship!

Yeah, my head-canon is that she was working for Adler, keeping tabs on Neal for him, but also that she did care for Neal (because how could she not?) and her loyalties were conflicted. I too am annoyed and frustrated that the show never gave us her side of the story, never resolved who she was. I spent all of season 2 expecting her to come back, and she never did.

Your tragic doomed ship is beautiful and achy. <333

Yeah, my head-canon is that she was working for Adler, keeping tabs on Neal for him, but also that she did care for Neal

I'm torn on this one - on the one hand Adler's line about how "the Kate I knew would still be alive" suggests that she was working for him originally, but then she fell in love with Neal and switched sides and that's what got her killed.

But then I can't figure out why she refuses to go to Copenhagen. Neal says it was a three-person job and fell apart because she wasn't there - if she wanted the music box (either because she's working for Adler and was going to give it to him, or just because it's expensive and they could sell it for a lot of money) it seems like she had a perfect opportunity to get it and she turned it down. (Unless that was the moment when she decided to stop working for Adler. Which could kind of make sense, and suggests she was hiding from Adler, not Neal, when Neal was arrested.)

My WC big bang fic this year was her POV of S1, and it was quite frustrating at times trying to stitch all the plotholes together. For someone who was such a huge influence on Neal's life she really should have had more character development in canon. *hearts them both anyway*

Or it could just be that she was obedient and loyal to Adler, and that shifted. But yeah, at this point I'm thinking we'll never know... although the fact that she came to Ellen for the Raphael and then didn't take it means she did have the opportunity to switch it out, and maybe the replacement had a code in it... /conspiracy theories R US

Congrats on your big bang. I am soooo behind on my reading. Again. /o\

That's pretty much how it seems to me, too. Luckily, I require no sense-making of my action shows (I have happily watched The Sentinel!) and am very easily distracted by adorable characters being adorable. Once I got over my weird aversion to Matt Bomer, I found myself enjoying the show a lot!

I never know what to do with Neal and Kate. Love, unadultarated love - and yet so many mysteries. We know about Neal's secrets, we'll never know if Kate had secrets of her own or not (She nuzzled him, then propped her chin on her hand and looked down with heavy eyes and a Sphinx expression: yes, that, her Sphinx-like persona!) And I never know what to do with Neal and Kate and me. No way to fight canon on this one - they're doomed, and they need to be doomed for Peter/Neal or Peter/Neal or Neal/Clinton to happen - or simply for Neal to live his life as we see on the show, and I'm good with either of these. Well, I love them together - just the way you show them here - but to know that there's no happy ending for them, always makes it bittersweet. The excerpt you chose for the summary - She'd be asleep soon. There was still time. - sums it all perfectly.
*discreetly wipes a tear*

Yes, that, exactly! It's heartbreaking how much he loves her, when we know it ends in BOOM!s and tears.

This is just so sad and painful. Because Neal is so obviously in love with Kate, but they just can't work out under these circumstances. What a wonderful little story.

In some ways, the miraculous thing about them is that they got past this. I mean, Neal was still lying to Kate (about the location of his stash, going after the music box, etc), but they lasted an amazingly long time considering the obstacles they started with, you know?

Yes, they got past a lot... they never overcame that certain amount of distrust between them, but that didn't stop them from loving each other. They were so young back then... I think they cared for each other very deeply, and a part of me really wishes they got their happy ending.

It irks me that the show never explained what exactly went on with Kate in Season 1. I want to know more about her and their history. I guess this is wone of the points where fanfiction is so very precious. I love to see their past explored, and I love the stories where Kate comes across as a strong person who loved Neal just as he loved her.

Anyway, I really enjoyed your little snippet.
