Author notes: Written for Challenge #85, 'Monsters'. I had a whole, huge story lined up to finish. But then I got two gallbladder attacks in two days and ended up in the ER. So, yeah, I'm making do.

It's amazing how fast opinions can change.

Hero, they called him, when he stood over Bach's corpse, his blade dripping with the blood of at least a dozen different Quincies. Ragged, and covered in streaks of dirt and the crimson of a hundred different wounds. The fall of an empire, the death of humans at his hands, and they called him a hero.

But then when his power flooded from him, as the world around him turned to ash, and the people close enough to be caught to dust, suddenly everything changed.

Monster, they screamed. And he knows they're right.
