Summary: Sherry tells Claire and Jill that she has a girlfriend.

Jill, Claire and Sherry are sat on a bench, occupying the same space for the first time in nearly six years. Jill has a pretzel, and is regaling them with tales of B.S.A.A glory.

Sherry is glum, eighteen and far from a hero; these women have lived entire lives while she’s been failing high school and tripping over her loafers. She feels comfortable sat between them, but inadequate. She sees them both as family and hell, by some definition in the world, they probably are.

Sherry’s mad. She should be happy, bursting at the scenes happy, the kind you ought to be when you think you’re in love. Instead, she feels sick, and can’t stand up without wobbling a little. She thinks of her first kiss, the first time she made the first move, all of it only days ago. She wants to crawl under her bed and never get up, and she hasn’t felt this way since Raccoon City.

Jill finishes a story, and Claire bursts out laughing. Sherry is glad that these two have each other, in the mad and crazy mess of monsters and war-mongering. They’ve been friends for years, and there’s a ring on Jill’s finger that makes her and Claire family. Sherry has nothing, nobody.

“What’s up sweetie?” Says Claire, leaning in with her big worried eyes. Sherry shrugs. Claire’s called her sweetie ever since she was twelve; in Claire’s eyes Sherry is still just a kid.

“I just…” And for a minute she thinks of telling them, but can’t quite bring herself to say it. They’re both so ordinarily heterosexual, and Sherry feels like a loner between them. After a pause, she tries again. “So. I have a date.”

They both grin, and poke her in the ribs.

“So,” says Jill, “what’s his name?”

Sherry blinks at them. “Her name, is Kate.”
