Multifandom: Tool: Prompt Generator

  • Sep. 10th, 2012 at 10:56 AM
Title: Genre Mixer Prompt Generator
Fandom: Any
Content notes: Prompts include sex, BDSM, non-con, and disturbing or violent imagery. These are only included by enabling NSFW prompts in the options.
Creator's notes: I've been mulling over creating this prompt generator for a while. It combines the two prompt styles that have proven to be most effective in breaking my writer's block: the first, a ficmeme that takes a list of characters and combines them randomly with cliché fic genres; the second, a bonus round in [community profile] hs_olympics where prompts were formatted with a ship and two genres to be mashed together.

This generator works by taking a user-supplied list of characters, and choosing from that list and a list of clichés and genres to create a random prompt. I've gotten a lot of really golden prompts while testing this, and I hope that any one of you can get some use out of it as well. The main sources I curated the clichés and genres from are listed on the generator page, although props must go to my lovely moirail [personal profile] kittyfreud who is actually responsible for compiling the majority of the genres, and who helped extensively with testing.

Click here for the prompt generator, and please let me know if anything is broken or if you think of anything I can add!

Wow, so I just gave this a spin with the first few characters that popped into my head, and the first prompt that came up was so good I think I'm doing to take a break from my WIP and write it :D thanks!

(Having test-generated a few prompts) Now I really need to find an excuse to write, or have someone write, Arranged Marriage + Bodyswap. :)

Ohoho I'm going to have to file that one away. I've been spam generating these for the past few days nonstop and I don't think I've run across that particular combination yet!

You should definitely find an excuse to write it though! :D

Yeah, I need an excuse to write it; sadly (or perhaps fortuitously) none of the fandoms I've written in so far lend themselves all that easily to the arranged marriage premise; I might have to branch out.... :)

Instant bookmark. This is awesome.

(Coding note: The footer covers up some of the prompts on a small screen (my netbook, frex) and can't be scrolled away. Screenshot. Maybe make it a header instead or make it un-absolute-position?)

Oh man, thank you!

Hmph, I was having the same issue when I tested it out on my netbook as well, and I'm not sure why that was still set to absolute positioning beeeecause it shouldn't have been. Oops! I futzed about with the CSS a bit more in an attempt to make the footer sticky. Let me know if it's still irrevocably broken, and thanks ever so much for the heads up!

Ehe, it took way more time and effort to get it working than it had any right to, but better a sticky footer than fixed. (I'm currently on a one-person crusade to remove all fixed headers on the Internet via Stylish. I have a 13" laptop and a 10" netbook and I know that professional web designers are probably using a big 24" monitor like my roommate, but dammit, I just don't have that much vertical real estate to spare on my screen. XP )

Thank you so much! I'm so thrilled people are finding it useful. :D

Random generator
I've been meaning to come back and say this - but I wound up accidentally using this to generate a long list of prompts for one of my fandoms, and have since been happily writing my way through the resulting ficlets in a way that just hasn't been possible for at least two years. Part of that's just timing, but then timing's important - and it's a lovely creative tool. (My last two fic efforts for this comm came from that list, too.)

So, thanks again for making and sharing it!
