She flinches the first time he touches her. It is barely a brush of fingertips against her bare skin, but as he lies above her, his brow furrows when he sees her wince.

“My dear, sweet Anne,” he whispers, his nose bumping gently against the back of her ear. “Do you fear me that much?”

She lets out a low breath as her hand covers his and brings his palm to cover her breast. “I don’t fear you, Richard,” she says softly, her warm breath ghosting over his neck and making him shiver. “I could never fear you.”

His grip on her waist tightens as he places a warm kiss on her shoulder and then the valley between her breasts. “He hurt you, then? That monster?”

“It doesn’t matter,” she mumbles breathlessly, for her husband has now moved lower whilst he places loving kisses on her belly and her hip. “Marrying him brought me to you. I cannot hate him for that.”

“You may forgive him, dear Anne, yet I can hate him still.” His voice is rough as his fingers gently pry her legs apart. She closes her eyes and prepares herself for what is to come, for the one act that her former husband, Edward, used to bruise her.

Yet, what she feels is her Richard’s tongue on her, and for the first time she feels pleasure, oh so much pleasure.
