Perry Mason Mysteries; Fanart; "Bookends"

Title: Bookends
Fandom: Perry Mason Mysteries
Rating: G
Fanart: Mixed media dolls
Characters/pairings: Perry Mason and Della Street
Author notes: The next time I make metal dolls I'm going to use something a lot thinner than roof flashing.

I've rekindled an interest in Erle Stanley Gardner's "Perry Mason Mysteries," both the books, the TV shows and the '80s movies. Perry Mason and Della Street, along with private detective Paul Drake were an unbeatable trio and the closest of friends. They aged well over the years, so much so that CBS begged Raymond Burr to come back and make movies in the 1980s. He agreed only if Barbara Hale would return as Della Street. Unfortunately, William Hopper (Paul) was gone by then, but Barbara's real-life son, William Katt, joined the cast as Paul Drake Jr. (I can just hear you all saying "awwww!")

And here they are:

I was very annoyed that the glue that promised NOT to bleed through paper really did bleed through the paper. Grrr.

My interest in art is severely hampered by my lack of drawing ability. I settled for making them more abstract, and in the end I was glad I had. Roof flashing is not easy to cut, especially around the curves. The next time I try this project I'll use a much thinner metal.

This website explains how to make them. I used textured scrapbook paper for their clothes. You can't really see them, but I've got sparkly gems on Della's suit as well as on Perry's tie and cuffs.

I'd have made some dolls using the older characters but I ran out of time and couldn't find usable screencaps. But here they are:

Thank you! I added a few more details after I took the photo — gold buttons and a pocket square for Perry and a couple of sparklies on Della's shoes.

It was a fun experiment. My next dolls should look a lot better now that I know what I'm doing!

Thanks!

I actually found a couple of Paul/Perry stories written from Paul's breezy point of view — neat!

One of these days I'll go with a fandom that's actually in this decade.

Or maybe I could write "The Case of the Fanatic Fangirl."

Paul was my favorite (I guess I've got a thing for cops/detectives *g*) and I remember feeling sorry for all the times he'd have to work while Perry and Della go off to have a steak dinner :D

You won't hear any complaints about older fandoms from me! ;) I can just see a fangirl breaking down under Perry's cross-examination: "Yes, I admit it! I committed H/C!"
