A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step - Lao Tzu

The attack on her village had been quick, violent. One moment things had been as they always were and the next the newcomers were everywhere. They had no honor, unlike the warriors of her tribe, sweeping through the village slaughtering men and children indiscriminately. And the fate of the women? The screams she heard made her quicken her pace as she attempted to flee.

But she was not fast enough.

Just when she thought it over, one of the attacker's sword swinging down on her, another appeared out of nowhere to stop it. He was dressed the same as the others, but she could see the spark within him, one that burned so brightly that he would rather fight a fellow warrior than see the man commit slaughter. This man fought for her, her life, her honor. And he died for her.

Or, he would have, had she, her sisters, and the shaman not interfered.

They worked through the night, weaving their medicine into his very soul, giving him life and repaying the debt she owed him. When he awoke she tried to explain, but while her language flowed gently like a babbling brook, his fell stumbling and stuttering from her lips. "You will not grow old. You will not die.... Until you find the one, and your souls are wed. In all of time, there is only one person you are meant to be with. We feel this. We know it. But we do not know how to find the one." Eyes clouded in pain and confusion stared up at her but she had no more words for him. His spirit was strong. He would succeed.

The Island of Many Hills, their beautiful Manhattan, was no longer a safe place for her people to call home so while her savior slept she and the others gathered together what they could and prepared moved on. She bade him one last look before they left and wondered, would he come to regret their actions or even his own? Would he consider what they did to him a blessing or a curse? But mostly, she wondered how long it would take before he found the one he was destined to be with and how he would feel when he finally succeeded. She wished him luck and strength on his journey, for it would most likely be a long one although, she hoped, a good one.
