Her fingers are gentle as they run through his hair, her legs warm under his cheek. They have been sitting like this for some time, Carl’s head on his mother’s lap as she tells him soothingly that everything will be all right.

“Even if we don’t have your father, you have me.”

Carl stays silent for a moment. “Do you think he’s alive? Do you think he survived?” Do you think dad has become one of them?

“I don’t know. But you have me.”

This is the last memory he thinks of before he puts a bullet through her head.
