Title: A Sense of Place, A Sense of Time
Words: 294
A/N: Meta musings about Justin (& Brian) in Time and Place. Title is from JB Jackson's epic book in the field of Landscape Studies.

Justin lived in so many places once he came out and came into his own as a young gay man. He went from the house he grew up in to Brian's loft, Debbie and Vic's, the hospital, his Mom's new condo, back to Brian's, Ethan's, roomed with Daphne but pretty much the loft again, LA for six months, finally the loft officially, then Michael and Ben's temporarily before moving into that run-down studio - but it was all his, before finally living in the loft again before moving to New York City.

During that same time, Brian only ever lived at the loft (minus a quick stay in 'Ibiza' during you know when).

For Brian, time went by in an instant. One day he was leading a relatively carefree life and the next he was over thirty, a successful business owner, father, partner, and cancer survivor. While many things had changed around him, he didn't really know where the time went - it was just gone. Poof. Perhaps it was because he had the same bed to crawl into every night (home by 3am at the latest, of course).

As for Justin, time passed quickly enough, too, but in a different way. All of those different places marked the milestones of his young adult life, none more important than the loft. The loft was 'home' long before Brian ever allowed that to be official. But the continuously changing roof over his head and pillow under it kept him searching for more, not realizing what always had been and what always would be right in front of him. Maybe the last push out the door would help him to realize he could have everything he wanted by staying in the same place. Hell, it worked for Brian.

Very thought provoking, mander. I always think about how Justin had so many different places to stay, and how Jennifer allowed him to be thrust out of the nest, which was the beginning of it all. She should have stood up to that asshole husband of hers.

I like this meme. ♥

Thanks!
I scrolled through my shelf for the best title for inspiring ficcage - this was the one - and then wracked my brain for what would work. I never really thought about it before in much depth about all the places that Justin has lived...so many for not being an army brat.
Yes Jen should have done something right away with Craig, but it must have taken her some time to come to terms with realizing her husband was SUCH AN ASSHOLE.

glad you liked it! :D
*hugs*

Owww, I hope it works for him too. The loft always was 'a place to live' for Brian until he shared it with Justin. Then it become to 'home'.

Wonderful.
Thanks

it was certainly home for them. where they fell in love.
I thinks that's why in nearly every fic, the loft is NEVER sold ;)

Justin sure changed many places.

Maybe the last push out the door would help him to realize he could have everything he wanted by staying in the same place. Hell, it worked for Brian.
Awww, me likes this!

Maybe it's like the Alchemist, where this dude leaves his home searching for a treasure under the pyramids that he would dream every night. Only when he arrived there he found out that the treasure was burried under the tree that he was sleeping every night having his dreams :D

Thanks! It's so interesting that Brian was always gotta get to New York, gonna get this client, then I'm gonna make it big in New York. but he never ended up moving there in the series. But he found fantastic success at home. and love. and family.

hmmm....now that I'm thinking about, so many people blame Linz for Justin moving, for putting that bug in the ear of Brian that helped push Justin to NYC, but I think that was really all Brian's doing in a sense - he was encouraging Justin to go live a dream that he never managed to (yet) because there was always something tying him to Pittsburgh. Perhaps with Justin leading the way, maybe Brian could finally find it in himself to follow? (this is me, still wishing I had a solid post 513 idea to build an epic story upon)

I agree. Brian's idea of true love did not include a person sacrificing their life for the person they loved. No way he would not push Justin to follow his dream.

I could see many scenarios working. Brian following, Justin coming back after managing to make his own way.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I have not finalised in my mind the future, only that the boys somehow make it :D
