Title: She Is
Fandom: Dollhouse
Rating: PG13

Summary: She does what is told, and that is all that she knows.

She’s a model, they tell her. She’s beautiful, funny, charming and limber. She enjoys the company of one man and she allows him to take her back to his place. She responds when he wants her to, she says what is expected, and when the time comes that she must go back, he smiles and says, “See you next Saturday, as always,” which is funny because she doesn’t remember seeing him that often.

*

She’s a cook, they tell her. She has had multiple awards, have prepared cuisines for His Holiness Dalai Lama and is currently opening her own restaurant. She moves among the masses as she bids them welcome to her new enterprise. She smiles at those she has known for quite a while, the investors, the friends, and she looks over the preparation of each dish until its perfection. When the time comes and she must go back, she doesn’t feel any loss.

*

She’s a negotiator, they tell her. She has had training that spanned a lifetime and she was top of her class for years. She has had one hundred and eleven successful saves while five percent of that number is deemed unsuccessful. All she has to do is follow the instructions she has been taught and bring the little girl home safe. When the time comes and she must go back, no one asks when she will be returning.

*

She’s a pilot, they tell her. She has been flying since she was ten beside her father who taught her everything. She joined the Air Force when she could and was granted her first flight nearly five days after. They need her to do a mission, and apparently no one else will do. She does what is needed, and she does it all well, and when the time comes and she must go back, none of the others say a word.

*

Sometimes, she dreams. She remembers a man’s face, and a child’s, and they look to her with utter happiness in her eyes. But, when she awakes she is always someone new, a person to do what is told and live as instructed. She doesn’t think, she doesn’t fight, she doesn’t win, she doesn’t lose.

She does what is told, and that is all that she knows.

Brilliant. Four different scenarios fleshed out. Nice echo using they tell her. All she knows is what she’s been programmed to do with no memories afterward. Her dream is poignant and contains s touch of sadness. Her life has become one of obedience and control. She lives in the present and dreams of the past. I wonder who the man and child are and how she ended up in the Dollhouse.

I really loved this concept for a tv show and couldn't help but want to write about it. Actually, I wrote this fic while thinking about one of those other characters who were in the Dollhouse. Sort of a... We know what Echo went through, what about the others, kind of situation. But, you're right, except for that last bit, it can apply to Echo too :D

I loved it... particularly when I realised who she was (that this wasn't Echo.) A really lovely twist, because most people would only write about her. It reminded me (surprise surprise) of a due South quote: "people aren't interchangeable, like snowmobile parts." The fact that, in such a short space of time, and without in any way shape or form being heavy about it, you touch exactly on her individuality, what makes her different. In a world where people are crushed into sameness you found a difference, and really made it count. Nice(as in precise, exact) use of language. JW couldn't have done better.

Thank you so much for such a lovely compliment. And the quote you stated was perfect in this regard. Everyone's individuality still lingers, only forgotten, is a theme I decided to play with, and I'm glad you thought it fitted well into this world.
