Title: Flawless Transition
Fandom: Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch
Rating: G
Length: 381 words
Content notes: N/A
Author notes: Pichi Pichi Pitch is one of those magical girl fandoms that unfortunately fell to the wayside in the wake of larger fandoms such as Sailor Moon or Cardcaptor Sakura. It's a shame, because the series is actually really good. It has mermaids who sing to defeat villains, what could be better than that!? :D
Summary: Caren's perfected the art of living a double life. Everyone else...not so much.

Caren hates it when people think they know better than she does. She’s spent her entire life juggling responsibilities. She’s come to the surface and gone back underwater so many times it’s become second nature. If anyone can live the perfect double life, it’s her.

But Caren is never fully comfortable on the surface. She never tries to make any friends, and she’s perfectly okay with that. She prefers her ocean, wide and blue and full of its own life.

Rina protests, saying she manages just fine, but Caren knows she’s wrong. After all, Caren’s not the one running around pretending to be someone she’s not just for some boy. A boy Rina knows all too well that she’ll only have to abandon once the time comes. Eventually she has to go back to her kingdom; they all do.

Lucia was lucky, and she’s been trying to convince the rest of the girls to have hope. But everyone else won’t be that fortunate. Caren thinks she’s the lucky one; she and Noel and Coco don’t have any personal attachments that they’ll have to leave behind in the end.

It’s not that she doesn’t feel bad (because she does), but all the other girls need to realize that nothing can ever be perfect and nothing will turn out they way it should. She came to that realization long ago, and she was fine with it.

Lucia and Hanon don’t want to accept that. Rina doesn’t want to admit that Caren is probably right. After all, the three of them have people on the surface that they care about. Hanon can talk about changes and differences until she runs out of air, but it doesn’t make her (or any of them, really) right.

Caren is willing to sit down with them while they explain to her why love is such a wonderful thing. She’ll humour them for as long as they’re willing to take it. But when she leaves she rolls her eyes and wonders why they think they can convince her otherwise. She’s the one who knows best, she’s the one who transitions flawlessly from regular girl to mermaid princess and back again.

And as soon as the rest of them figure that out, the sooner everything can get back to normal.

I don't know the fandom, but I very much like this story, primarily because it has such a strong female lead. The other characters sound interesting, too, and I'd love to learn more about them.

Excellent use of the prompt!
