Author's notes: A double drabble involving twins. That's probably pretentious, but so am I.
Summary: Dr. Andonuts recognizes Lucas the first time he sees him.



Nobody told Dr. Andonuts that the boy he worked on has a twin.

The instant he sees the boy, he knows; his hair is the wrong color, but otherwise, the two could have been identical. Dr. Andonuts is reminded, involuntarily and wretchedly, of the time in college he sat outside after an anatomy lab, only to see a cat who could have been the clone of his dissection specimen walk across the grass. He wants to say to the boy the same thing he wanted to say to the cat: We've never met, but I know you. I've taken you apart. The only difference is that the boy came to him already in pieces, a jigsaw puzzle of broken bones and internal hemorrhaging, but isn't that academic? He may have saved his life, but he did him just as much good as the dead cat on the lab table, its organ systems painstakingly labeled and isolated. Dr. Andonuts knows he can say nothing to the boy's twin: not just "nothing helpful" or "nothing comforting," but nothing at all. No words exist for what he has done.

Remorse tastes like bile in his throat, unfamiliar but unmistakable. He wishes he hadn't stopped hiding.
