due South : Fanfic : Train Ride to Do-Over

Title : Train Ride to Do-Over
Fandom : due South
Characters : Victoria Metcalf
Rating : General Audiences
Word Count : 188

Author Notes : Written for the fan_flashworks "Do Over" Challenge. As I rode the train home from Bitchin' Party, snapshot-images of Victoria riding the rails came to my mind, and I wrote what appeared in those snapshots. With a nod to Luzula for causing me to reconsider Victoria.

Summary : Victoria is riding the rails again, with conquests and vengeances in mind.

FROM THE PAST
As her train pulled away from the Chicago station, Victoria was thinking that if ANYONE was going to shoot HER Ben, it ought to have been HER. But she hadn't pulled the trigger; she had the chance and she didn't take the shot. And then Vecchio did it. Shot him. Shot HER Ben. Shot him in the back. Her scorn was intense...every man she had killed, or even considered killing, she had gotten close, right up into their face, looked into their eyes. And that's what she intended to do some day with Vecchio.

IN THE PRESENT
Victoria's do-over isn't going as planned. Again she won't be taking Fraser away with her...he's gone North on vacation. And she won't be taking down Vecchio...the Vecchio she finds at the two-seven is not the Vecchio she wants, is instead some new Detective Vecchio whose presence leads her to think there are machinations here whose purpose, when grasped, will lead her where she wants to go.

TOWARDS THE FUTURE
Victoria has connections. Victoria utilizes her resources. Victoria is leaving Chicago, leaving on a train for Las Vegas.

An interesting glimpse into the mind of Victoria. I can definitely see her reacting in exactly that way.

TYK for commenting, exbex! I'm really happy that you found it interesting, and found it ringing true. This isn't my first dS, but it is my first consideration of what Victoria might be thinking after VS.

Oh, I can see her thinking that. She couldn't bring herself to do it, but damn if she's going to let someone else do it...

TYK, Luzula...your response especially means a lot to me because you are the one who put me (pun intended) "on this track". It was at BP when I off-handedly said "I hate Victoria" and you said some things that made me feel I really want to start delving INTO so provocative a character rather than AVOIDING her.

That's really chilling.... you know, I always ever thought Victoria would come back for Fraser, but your little insight into her head really makes me believe that she would want to get revenge on Vecchio. And now that I think about it, it makes total sense :) I'm pleased that Victoria finally got an appearance in your stories after haunting your plotbunnies on and off

Ah, success for me if you felt the chill!

And those damn plotbunnies with Victoria and the handcuffs are now BREEDING LIKE MAD.

Hahahaha *manic laugh* Beware of the plotbunnies of doom XD They're taking over! Oh well, stash them into a closet. They don't go bad ;)

Hi, my friend!

I have to tell you that you're a genius, your every writing is so awesome and full of emotions!

At first I thought..."Okay, she had those devil thoughts but don't mind her, she is gone now" but then I realized "Oh my...she is after Vecchio!" and it's frightening!!

Really good work!

TYK, m'dear! I'm so pleased this gets such an emotional response from you and that you "feel the scare".

And I've already got a sequel in mind that is going to be of concern to BOTH Rays!

YAY YOU, for posting fic!!!! \o/

I love the idea that if anyone were going to shoot Ben, it ought to be her. It's twisted and very Victoria.

I hope she gets everything that's coming to her when she finds Vecchio. *mean smile*

TYK, hazelwho, for the yay! And for supporting my thought that Victoria would be possessive about who shoots Benton!

We'll see what "Armando's" mob position allows him to do about Victoria! *answering mean smile*

I love the idea of Victoria coming back to wreak vengeance on Vecchio as well as "her Ben." Actually, in Futility that's just what Victoria does, and she fairly drives poor Vecchio (and Fraser) mad while she's tormenting them. But I love yours for the sparse snap shots it gives, it's very very chilling. Reminds me of a Leonard Cohen song where he says of a lover "let me walk into your storm." Victoria's not a woman you want to mess with. Once she's got you, she's got you, that's it, she's not letting you go.

TYK for reading and commenting, BG! And you are a fellow Leonard Cohen fan, too! That's very apropos, what you quoted (plus how the song's first line is about lighting candles) from LC's "One of Us Cannot Be Wrong" :

"An Eskimo showed me a movie he'd recently taken of you:
the poor man could hardly stop shivering,
his lips and his fingers were blue.
I suppose that he froze when the wind took your clothes
and I guess he just never got warm.
But you stand there so nice, in your blizzard of ice,
oh please let me come into the storm."

*scampers off to get a look at your "Futility" fic*

Hey! A fellow fan of laughing Lenny. :) Yes... if I could only do fan videos I would SO much want to do a Victoria vid to this song. I nearly included the line, "you stand there so nice, in your blizzard of ice, oh please let me come into the storm..." then I wondered if I was allowed to for copywrite reasons, so let it go. But yes, it's a great song, and he's a great singer. :) Another great thing that Canada has given the world.

There's no copy infringement in quoting part of a song or poem as long as the author's name is stated. *offers reassurance*

LC was actually "my very first Canadian," and one of the two things (the other being a family vacation to Canada in the 1960's) that triggered what has come to be a lifetime condition of being a "Canadaphile". In the 1970's I saw a Royal Winnipeg Ballet performance in Chicago of "The Shining People of Leonard Cohen," where the ballet was performed to a recitation of LC's poetry...and I was smitten and never recovered.

When I was a kid my Dad was offered a grant to do his doctorate in Canada, and we all got so excited about going. I read up on everything I could find, I was so looking forward to it. Then my mother got ill, and he had to turn it down. I often wonder how differently life might have turned out if things had worked out another way. Of course, I would never have met my son's father, and the world would be minus a bright and beautiful young man. But if there was some way I could have had the same son and be living in Canada I'd be a very happy girl.

Aha! I figured out this is where I should be posting about your flashfic! Sorry for rambling...

Regarding this particular fic, I really loved the way you compressed so much into so few words... it's a real gift to cut to the bone of something with no waffle at all. I've seen that in your poetry as well, another great Victoria poem you did, where Ray's bullet is what saves Fraser's life. You have the same spare gift in a dream poem of dancing, where Fraser and Kowalski share a dream space.

But this is brilliant, it is a concentrated burst of insight, and it feels like there should be a huge story arc behind it, but you focus it through such a tight prism that it would almost be a shame to expand on it. Very beautifully done.
