Title: Forty Books
Fandom: Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell (TV)
Length: 200
Content notes: mention of canonical character death
Author note: for [personal profile] sevenswells, with thanks for the rewatch of episode 3 that inspired it.
Summary: Forty books in a leather portmanteau, carried into a forest in Spain.

Forty books in a leather portmanteau, carried into a forest in Spain. Forty books brought from Yorkshire to London to the Peninsula. Forty books, collected over as many years by a man who thought he was the only magician in England. Forty books, carried by the servant of the second magician, prised from their owner's reluctant grasp and sacrificed to the national interest. Forty books, relinquished for a time in pursuit of other books more desirable because unpossessed. It is as well that the first magician cannot see what becomes of them: scraps of paper fluttering from the sky, falling on the dead and on a man who might as well be.

Later, the second magician will attempt to piece together the blackened fragments of a single page from all that has been lost. His hands shake, as they always will; he does not know this yet. The Duke of Wellington, barking orders at him, makes an impatient gesture that sends the fragments flying into the air again. He has no books now but his wife's parting gift, A Child's History of the Raven King, the last evidence of her love and a signpost to a future he cannot imagine.

Lovely descriptions, which will no doubt make more sense once I've seen the series ;)

Thank you - yes, I think they will! Glad you enjoyed it anyway :)

This is so sad and even terrifying! I don't know for certain to whom you are alluding in each instance, but I feel badly for each of them. Is JS&MN really such an unhappy book?

thank you - it is an unhappy book in some ways but also has a lot of humour. the TV version adds more angst in places, and this fic is based on scenes that don't appear in the book.

(in the first episode, we hear a prophecy that two magicians will arise in England: the first magician is Gilbert Norrell and the second Jonathan Strange.)

Oh this is a painful one! Beautifully done though :)

I have always been very unhappy with what happened to Jeremy and it reminds me why I dislike Norrell so much when he asks Jonathan to return his books afterwards.

thank you - I feel the same about Jeremy; he should be there in the later part of the story and it's not right that he isn't!

You really captured that scene very well here. Jonathan's unknown future, and the loss of all the books that Norrell was so reluctant to part with, which mean more to him than the life of the man who was lost.

thank you! I'm glad you thought it worked. I can see why the adaptation does what it does here, but I mind about Jeremy.

Nice! I've started watching my boxed set and have just seen episode 3 so this is timely! I'm amazed at how they've managed to get everything so true to the book. The scene in the woods was poignant and then when Wellington sent the scraps flying it was all even, somehow, worse.

thank you! glad you enjoyed the fic. I love episode 3 - despite my reservations about some of the angst (Jeremy's death, Norrell intercepting the letters between Strange and Arabella). and yes, Wellington sending the scraps flying somehow makes it all worse...
