Summary: It is said that the apples that grow near the gallows will be bitter on the tongue of a lover who will betray. (x)

"Did you try one?"

"I'm afraid I can't follow, my lady."

"The apples. Did you try one?"

He didn't know what he had expected when she had called him up to her chambers. Yelling, probably; she had been too silent as of late. Revising her judgement, even; he deserved less than she had granted him, and everyone knew it.

A small part of him might have harboured the faint hope of reconciliation, of returning to how the things had been between them before. Like that night above the stables...

Not, however, inqiries about some fruit from Val Royeaux. He swallowed his disappointment and lifted his gaze.

She examined various reports, as she often did. Her face was only illuminated by the flickering candles on the edge of her desk. She didn't even look at him-

Had she looked at him, just once, since she had witnessed his confession at the gallow? He couldn't remember.

"I haven't, my lady."

She nodded curtly, and dismissed him with a wave, her attention already elsewhere.

He bowed, and left. He didn't have to taste them to know they would be bitter. But he wouldn't rest until their flesh was sweeter to him than honey.
