Saavedro stared at the book that had led those monsters to his home, and the cage surrounding it. It looked just like an egg, a whimsical latticework egg that would hatch for the little children as they passed their tests, opening up to reveal something wonderful.

If only it had never hatched. Then perhaps his people would still be safe from their plundering ways. How could something so beautiful have caused such horrors?

He’d already started editing the symbols, recording over the old messages. This hatching would show their father the truth. If only he knew it would be enough!
