Summary: Proteus, Julia, Valentine and Silvia figure out their relationships after the play.



Julia stirs eggs and milk together, then presses buttons on the still unfamiliar hob to make it fire up so she can make a scramble.

"Let me - " Silvia says from a chair behind her, and starts getting up to help, but Julia finds the right switch before Silvia does. She turns around and smiles. "Thanks." They kiss quickly, on the lips, then Silvia sits back down and grabs Valentine's hand. Proteus looks at the other three and thanks his lucky stars that he's here.

It didn't slot into place straightaway. Julia gave him a completely justified earful on the journey back – Valentine and Silvia had left them in their own train compartment expressly so Julia could shout at him – and somewhere along the way there she believed his words and forgave him for going after Silvia, believed, too, his tears and his confession about his love for Valentine that had landed him in this pickle in the first place, and took it all as one who was confident that things could be straightened out.

Meanwhile, Silvia also had things to say about Valentine's offer of a double wedding and a big house for everyone. They eventually re-joined one another. Silvia observed Proteus tentatively holding Julia's hand, and Julia letting him. Their rings were restored to their rightful place.

She observed, too, Valentine looking at Proteus with barely concealed desire. She remembered well how close they had been when Proteus had come to her father's court, but at the time she'd been pre-occupied with her own feelings for Valentine, and so maybe overlooked a few things which came back to her.

And then, there'd been some logistical challenges with the move, but eventually they'd found themselves in this house, big enough for the four of them, and Speed and Launce had put the furniture together after they'd moved all their other stuff in, and they'd toasted love and friendship on the balcony on their first night. The wedding had come and gone, and with it the wedding night, and on the morning after, the realisation that the world hadn't ended, that they could have this life, could build it together.

Julia dishes out scrambled egg and toast and sits down when everyone else has their portion on a plate before them. She kisses Proteus before she starts eating, Valentine kisses Silvia, and then Valentine kisses Proteus, a quick and shy kiss that's over in a heartbeat.

They're all still getting used to the idea that it's okay to want what they want and to act on it, that it simply isn't the case that there's less love if it's shared between more than two people. There are challenges ahead, there's no doubt of that, but Julia's always been of a mind that you can tackle anything the day throws at you if you've had a good breakfast, so she starts eating.
