"One egg," Hannibal said, emerging from their over-sized and tragically empty fridge. "Really, Will?"

"Oh." Will tried to remember when he'd last shopped. "Sorry? I forget about these things when you're away."

That seemed to soothe Hannibal. Implied flattery often did.

"We have vegetables," Will added vaguely, but Hannibal shooed him out of the kitchen door.

An hour later a delicious smell drew Will back indoors. Their simple kitchen table was festooned with tiny animal skulls resting on nests of shredded paper.

"A bureaucrat?" Will guessed. "Endangered species?"

"Not as endangered as him." Hannibal smiled and took his first bite.
