Naoto had the inescapable impression that Rise had lured her into a trap, but that might be exaggerating the situation. She had a seat on the sofa – a real sofa, plush and soft, not a futon – that occupied a whole wall of the small apartment that Rise had acquired for herself, folding her hands in her lap and waiting for the idol in question – her girlfriend of three months – to emerge from her bathroom. Under normal circumstances, she might review her notes on the most recent case in her smartphone, but she instead found herself reviewing her relationship and how it had progressed in recent days.
Hand-holding. A first kiss – not a peck on the lips, but a true kiss, including tongue. That had left Naoto short of breath, turning red, and trembling, but Rise had only winked at her, saying, as she turned to leave her standing at her car, "Maybe I'm moving a little fast, but, if you liked that, there's more. Much more. Just ask." And Naoto had been of two minds about that. On the one hand, she enjoyed simply being in a relationship, enjoyed talking to Rise and seeing how her mind worked. On the other hand, she had started to realize that there might be a strong physical pull underlying all of that, and that attraction, wordless and almost irresistable, made her a little uneasy.
That uneasiness had underpinned their date – the first date since they had shared that kiss and opened the door to new things. Rise had invited her up to her apartment, and there had been a gravity to that invitation that had never been there before, but Naoto had accepted it, and she had already started wondering at the possibilities.
Rise returned from the bathroom, sitting next to Naoto and smiling as she said, "If you're nervous, I don't blame you. I may not look it, but ... I'm a little nervous, too." She had a light blush on her cheeks, and Naoto had to admit to herself that she made her embarrassment look good. "A little for me, but ... more for you. I don't want to rush you into anything you don't want to do." She inhaled, exhaled. "Maybe look and see where our boundaries are before we do anything about pushing 'em. I think that's smart."
"I agree," Naoto replied, though she allowed the silence to stretch for a second before she added, "and I'm sorry if I'm not just jumping in with both feet, but it's taken me a while to get to this point. I mean, I spent most of my life not feeling comfortable in my own body, and –" She shook her head. "– even if I'm doing better, I've still got doubts." She let her shyness into her eyes as she looked at Rise. "I'm with a beautiful girl, after all. Whatever I end up doing with her, I want to make sure it's done right."
"You're always so considerate," Rise said softly, "but ... doubts? What's there to doubt? Do you think you won't be good? I mean –" She touched her lips, still moist with the gloss she had reapplied. "– you got kissing right on the first try, and that's a big thing. You, um –" The novelty of her looking embarrassed had not faded. "– you kind of made my toes curl when you did that. That's why I thought it was safe to ask you up here."
"Kissing is one thing," Naoto said. She had already become extremely aware of how little distance separated the two of them, of how bright-eyed and amazing Rise looked with her hair down, especially in the low light of the apartment. "I'm a little more worried about ... after. And there's a lot of after." Her heart had started pounding in her chest, never mind that nothing had happened between them yet. "Please ... be patient with me. If I hesitate, it's not because I don't want to do something. I'm just nervous."
"No, no, it's okay," Rise replied, leaning forward, almost nose-to-nose with Naoto, "but, if you're not sure, maybe start with what you already know? Maybe ... kiss me again?" So close, Naoto could smell her perfume – fruits tonight, rather than her normal blend of flowers. And to kiss her would be so easy. It seemed foolish to hesitate.
Rise waited for Naoto to come to her, immediately sighing happily into the kiss when she did. Before, we kissed, and that was it. This time – ? Naoto held her around the waist, enjoying the taste of her mouth, the soft texture of her tongue, the little mmm sounds she made. I'm kissing Rise. On one level, it seemed so implausible, and yet nothing felt more right and natural as the seconds – and then minutes – ticked past.
Rise had to surface for air, and she said, her face almost as red as her lipstick, her eyes a little unfocused, "O-Okay, I'm, uh –" She took a deep breath. "– Naoto, I'm ... really, really turned on right now. Either you're really good at this, or I'm a lot easier than I ever thought I was. Maybe a little of both." A weak chuckle. "I thought I'd seduce you when I asked you up here, but you're kind of turning the tables on me here."
"I promise I'm not trying to," Naoto said honestly, trying to be stoic about the whole thing, never mind that her legs felt like they wanted to turn to jelly. "But, if I am, that's ... not so bad, is it?" She raised a brow in spite of herself – always a little of the dashing detective, never mind that she had left her hat at home for a change. "I like ... seeing you like this. Intimately, I mean. It's something no one else gets to see." Her voice turned husky, and she asked, "I could kiss you all night, but what else would you like?"
"Else?" Rise squeaked. "I –" She paused, visibly trying to find that balance between what she wanted and what level of self-control she was willing to surrender. "More kissing, but –" Her voice dropped. "– c'mon and put your hands on me, Detective." And Naoto needed no more prompting than that to crush their lips together again.
Rise immediately pushed Naoto down against one arm of the sofa, sitting more or less astride her, almost purring as Naoto ran her hands up the back of her gauzy top, fingertips brushing bare skin. More. Rise broke the kiss, lifting her arms, helping Naoto to pull the blouse from her body in one quick gesture and toss it on the floor. Better. Skin – soft and hot. Rise had already broken a sweat, and Naoto could feel her hands shaking as they rested on the buttons of her dress shirt, underneath her jacket. Oh?
"May I – ?" Rise breathed into her ear. "Please?" It might have been the need in her voice that made Naoto nod, sitting up slightly and smiling up at her as she pushed the jacket from her shoulders and forced herself to undo one button of her shirt at a time, rather than fly through them and risk tearing anything. "There. Better." Naoto still had the shirt on, but it was open, and Rise lay down upon her, giving her the unusual – but not at all unwelcome – sensation of being skin-to-skin together. "Much better."
"Rise," Naoto breathed after another long tongue-in-mouth session. Rise had one hand on her belt, the other resting on her slacks. "This is –" She paused, started again. "I –" A deep breath. "I don't think I'm afraid any more, but –" She looked down at where Rise had her hands. "– if you and I keep going, we're going to have sex." The words tasted peculiar in her mouth. "That's something that I want to happen, and I'm sure of that, now, but –" She smiled, a mixture of pleasure and weariness, coming down from the high of having Rise in her arms. "– that's all the more reason for me not to rush it."
"N-No, I understand," Rise admitted, her face flushed. She snuggled up to Naoto, resting her head on her chest and holding her close as she said, "It's ... kind of scary, isn't it, knowing just how much you want someone?" Her soft voice trembled – vulnerable, needing to be reassured, intimate, the real and private Rise.
"It is," Naoto said, kissing her on top of her head, fingertips playing along her ribs, "but desire's like anything else, really. If you've only just started to know it, it's fearsome, but the more you understand it, the more you learn about it, the more you realize it's not something you need to fear." She closed her eyes. "I guess that's a little too rational of me to say, but it's the truth. I'm here for you. We can explore it all together."
"Mmm," Rise said. And she whispered, "Just ... hold me for now. Please." And Naoto let her settle into her arms, enjoyed the sense of her belonging there, listened to the small sounds of the apartment – the ticking of a small clock, the traffic running outside.
I never could have imagined this, Naoto thought, the heat gradually draining from her face, but here it is, here she is, and this is only the beginning.
