He sits at the fountain and watches people make wishes. Most of them are safe. They throw in old pennies, things that they wouldn't even pick up if they dropped one on the street. He lets them walk away, never says a word.

The ones that frighten him are the children, the ones who hold their money tightly in their fists. If he thinks back, he can still remember how warm the pennies had felt, how much he'd wanted to disappear.

He can't warn them all away. They wouldn't understand the danger of wishes. But he still does his best.
