O hands that speak, to summon & rejoice
To guide & teach & temper, shaping sound
Like willing clay & giving structure voice
Complex and pure, both impish & profound --
Raise the baton - a thin white wand to pierce
Past pattern, ink or poetry's impress
To pure emotion - passionate & fierce,
With every fiber aching to express --
With spine and eye and fingers sing to life
& coax the notes spun soft & rough & proud
Seducing ear and mind with love and strife,
And weaving whole - both tapestry & shroud -
The music wrung from silence, ardent art
That speaks from soul to soul, & feeds the heart.
