Hal leaves for Westminster without much ceremony, and certainly without any goodbye they'd both have liked.
Well, that Ned would have liked. Guessing Hal's mind is more than anyone can manage.
He never had any illusions about what they were to each other, so he's surprised at how hollow he feels when Hal is gone.
He does what anyone would do in a similar situation and puts rather more sack in his belly than he can hold. When his head hits the wall he knows it's time to go home. He also knows he'll still feel shit in the morning, but right now it helps take the edge off.
Hal was always going to have to leave this way of life behind, but being discarded like a toy is, as Ned is discovering, much harder in practice than in theory.
