Men have a confection they call 'rock-cake' (and there is little doubt but that they got the idea of it from the Shire, for the Hobbitish version, while looking much the same, is far superior.) Dwarves, particularly the Company of Thorin Oakenshield, are very fond of Bilbo's recipe. But Dwarves have a rock-cake of their own, though it is not a food-stuff. No, Dwarven cake-rock is a particular kind of stone, wherein striations and layers of different minerals are found in dazzling array, or subtle conjunction, each color and texture a separate delight: the whole a feast for those with stone-sense.
