* * * *

Don't forget to take your medication every day, David, the doctors had said, and all of these concerns you have will start to disappear. But nothing had disappeared. All of those different pills, all of those side effects, and nothing had changed: Peoria, Illinois still represented the zero point for alien invasion, and Dave Lonuts still had the inescapable impression that the aliens had already arrived, infiltrating the human population to choose targets for the inevitable onslaught of UFOs. But how to tell the aliens apart from real humans? No amount of medication could help him do that.

He had been able to handle the first of them. They had dropped from the sky in eggs, landing on the streets, hatching only seconds after touching the ground. And the ground itself had become unsafe. Dave had to climb on telephone poles, on the roofs of houses – no telling if any particular patch of ground could hold his weight. It might turn into lava at any instant, the result of ... a seismic device, perhaps? To destabilize the crust of the planet and transform the surface into a more suitable environment for the invaders? If any alien touched the fire, that alien became stronger. Faster, too.

But Dave had been able to stay above the fire, to throw the eggs into the lava before they could hatch, to keep the aliens off his scent. ... Except that he had been outnumbered. There had simply been too many of them. No matter how he ran, no matter how he jumped from roof to roof, they caught up to him in their teeming masses. And he had awakened in a padded room. Too late. The aliens had concealed all evidence of their activities, assumed human shape, turned the authorities against him. No one believed anything he said. The doctors locked him up and fed him pills.

Why don't they finish me off? Dave thought miserably, looking out the window, his eyes darting around the sky, trying to determine if he was seeing birds ... or possible UFOs, already coming down for the main landing. I know what they're up to. Why don't they just kill me and keep it quiet? If they had already infiltrated every human institution, they could easily do that. Or did they want to sit there and laugh at him? He had done his absolute best, and they had still overcome him and captured him. Sadists. They're enjoying this. Wherever they were – above him, below him, all around him.

The world's ending, and nobody knows about it but me. He stared at the small TV in his room – never turned on, but it seemed to be watching him, nonetheless ....

END.
