Another day, another stay in the emergency room. But Kimihito never made that journey by himself. At the start, several of his charges had accompanied him, but ... Miia – engaged to him, these days, thanks to the laws being amended – had been his only escort for about a year, riding next to his stretcher in the ambulance, taking him by the hand – the one that did not have the I.V. going into the wrist – to keep him alert. Her skin did not have the same heat to it that human skin did, but it still comforted him, as did her scales, cool and supple in a way that mere skin never could be.

He seemed to be on the mend almost every day, recovering from one injury in time to sustain the next in a fresh round of antics, but it never seemed like a big price to pay for waking up in a house full of the people he adored, for waking up in a bed next to the woman he loved. Touching her scales in the ambulance reminded him of how it felt to open one eye and see the first rays of the Sun through his blinds, her head on his chest, her tail coiled around him like a blanket. He started his day surrounded by her in the most literal sense possible. Who could say that about their relationship?

Kimihito looked up at her face, returning the smile that he spotted there. He could not begin to imagine the stories they were going to be able to tell their daughters.
