Lisa hadn't expected him to show up. She'd left an invitation at the Ship, one she'd written out without registering the name on it until after it was too late to change it. There'd been no RSVP.

He was the last one through the receiving line, a pale face standing out in the crowd of her family and friends. She recognized him instantly, and felt a wash of relief that he'd understood what she was really asking.

“Congratulations,” he said, upon reaching her. He smiled and took her hands, squeezing them softly. “I'm so happy for you.”

He moved on, shaking her new husband's hand, offering the same platitudes, while in her head Lisa heard the real words: Whenever you're ready, we're ready for you.

Soon, Lisa answered. There's just a couple more things I need to do. Her early life had been too unstable for the kinds of demands that being a Tomorrow Person had placed on it. Now that she'd had some time to build the support she'd need to cope, she could no longer tune out the others' presence in her mind.

“Who's that?” her husband whispered as Adam walked away. “I never seen him before.”

“An old friend,” she answered. Adam would be returning the Ship now, as she'd known he would, even thought she'd saved a seat for him at the reception. He'd already given his gift: She would be welcomed back.

“Old boyfriend?”

Lisa shook her head. “No.” She planted a kiss on her husband's lips, reassuring him, promising him that he'd get the full story when the time was right. “I'll introduce you later.”
