Title: Counting Your Costs
Fandom: Dragon Age
Rating: G
Length: 200 words

Author notes: This is a reimagining of an old piece of fic, written for the 'arithmetic' prompt in fan_flashworks.
Summary: When it is time to make a big decision, it may be a simple matter of numbers.

Sara sat at the small desk that crouched against the wall of Gamlen’s apartment and sighed before beginning again.

“You know, counting them a thousand times won’t get you a different result,” said Bethany from where she stood by the fire.

Sara ignored her, methodically placing each coin in a new pile as she tallied up their net worth.

“Four sovereigns and sixty silver,” she said as she pushed away from the desk.

“Just like last time,” said Bethany, her tone liberally dosed with sarcasm.

“It isn’t enough,” Sara said, trying not to let the panic leak into her voice. “Their rate has been going up.”

“It will be okay, sis. I’m tired of hiding.”

“No, I won’t let you give up so easily.” Sara paced the small confines of the room. “There are rumours. An expedition to the Deep Roads, if we could hire on-”

“And run straight back to the Darkspawn?”

“I won’t let the Templars take you!” Sara said, turning to Bethany and grasping her shoulders.

Bethany just looked at her, lips pressed together.

Sara dropped her arms. “I’m – sorry,” she said. “But – please – don’t talk that way.”

Bethany sighed. “We can try Hightown tomorrow,” she said.

Here, from Sara's POV Bethany wants to turn herself in to save the family. But is that what truly motivates this Bethany?

Sara tends to assume people's motivations are the same as her own would be in the situation. You're right, Bethany's motivation isn't to save the family (although it would). It's complex. She wants to end her fugitive life, and all of the pressure she feels for being a mage in her family (including the pressure to want to stay out of the Circle), and she also wants to find out what she's missed out on in her life. While she received education while her father was alive, for the last four years her education has languished. She longs to enter a scholastic atmosphere, where she can immerse herself in learning. She won't get that no matter what Sara does about their situatino. I have always believed that Bethany turned herself voluntarily in to Cullen while Hawke is away in the Deep Roads, extracting a promise of no retribution on her family, and I tried to foreshadow that here.

The game provides so many blatant clues suggesting that Bethany turned herself in that I am baffled by arguments otherwise.

...she also wants to find out what she's missed out on in her life.

I can believe this heacanon/explanation. For my primary Bethany (the one who stars in "Precious Things" which is the only DA fanfic I actually feel committed to someday finishing as fanfic), this is one part of her complex motivation. I imagine her hearing stories from her father about his time in the circle and wondering what it is like to have access to the Circle library and magical research, but also thinking about playing magical pranks with peers as a form of social bonding.

I picture Bethany as a very social person yet as someone who spends a lot of time in her head. Social in the sense that she needs to be part of a social structure in order to feel grounded -- her identity and sense of self is deeply tied to her social network and her social role. And, spending time in her head in the sense that she ruminates and thinks matters through entirely in her head and then waits until she has come to her own understanding/conclusion before sharing what has been on her mind. So, this puts her In contrast with people who like to think aloud with others about this and that while they go about forming opinions/understandings/conclusions.
