While repotting the lavender on the terrace, Viola wiped the sweat from her forehead with the back of her hand, leaving a streak of soil on her damp skin.

Francesco joined her with two glasses of lemonade, the half‑melted ice cubes clinking softly.

“Break?” he asked, handing her one.

Viola took a sip and sighed. “Exactly what I needed. Thanks.”

Francesco plucked a lavender flower from the pot and tucked it into her hair. “Since you showed up, nothing’s been the same.”

Viola looked at him, surprised. “For better or worse?”

He winked. “I plead the fifth.”
