The orphanage’s garden was flourishing, thanks to eager assistance from most of the children old enough to carry a watering can, or pull weeds. The children were flourishing too, from playing outside in a safe space, and working in the garden, as well as from the fresh fruit and vegetables it was already producing. There was never a shortage of volunteers to pick fresh veggies for dinner, and even the fussiest children were more willing to eat things they’d grown themselves.

Dee and Ryo helped out with the heavy work when needed, cutting the grass and the hedges, doing the heavy digging. They were also teaching the children what was a weed to be pulled up, and what was a plant. There’d been a few mistakes along the way, but that was only to be expected.

Mother was happy to sit on a bench in the shade, watching her charges as they watered the flower and vegetable beds. Sometimes they brought worms, caterpillars, and other bugs to show her. It made her smile.

“I remember Dee, when he was… oh, four or five, coming indoors one day after a rainstorm with his pockets full of snails,” she said with a chuckle. “He wanted to keep them as pets. I made him put them back outside where they belonged, but I found out later he’d kept one in a jar and was feeding it cabbage and lettuce stolen from the kitchen. He was such a mischief-maker.”

Ryo grinned. “He still is.”
