Summary: Another present.

“This is for you.” Sonny tosses something at Vince, who catches it before he even recognizes it’s coming. Small. Black. Lightweight.

Vince glances down at the jewelry box in his hand, then back up to Sonny. The man is rocking back and forth in his desk chair like an excited kid, face lit up like a pinball machine.

“Open it, open it!”

Vince sees the sparkle first and his eyes jerk up to Sonny again. Sonny’s grinning like a shark.

It’s a diamond pinky ring. Just like the one Sonny’s wearing, and Vince feels his stomach twist. It’s what he’s there for, getting close to Sonny, and he’s known since the very first day that ‘getting close’ was just a euphemism for getting dragged into the ocean at night with no idea which way the tide was running. The waves keep crashing over his head, and all he can do is keep swimming,

“What, are we going steady now?” The question comes out sharper than he means it to, but it doesn’t break the tension between them. If anything, Sonny’s grin widens.

“Nah, Vinnie. I wouldn’t keep you from the girls. Date anyone you like.” He spreads his arms wide, like he’s showing Vince the kingdoms and saying they could be his. “Date ‘em all, if that’s what you want.”

“Then what is this?” But Vince knows he’s pushed as hard as he can afford to, and he slides the ring onto his finger. It glitters in the morning light through the window, but not half as brightly as Sonny.

“People need to know you’re mine.” Sonny says it so matter-of-factly. Water is wet, the sky is blue, and Vince belongs to him.

It makes his stomach twist again, a fish fighting the hook, but he’s ready this time. His laugh sounds like someone who doesn’t believe his good luck, and not like he's gasping for air before the water closes in.
