Telepaths have always been set apart from the rest of society; that’s true of earth’s telepaths at least, Byron can’t speak for the telepaths of other races. Perhaps some of them are treated better, possibly even with a degree of respect, but on earth…

Telepaths are hated and feared, and PsiCorps fosters that antipathy as a way of controlling them, and by extension, the human race, because nothing can be hidden from a telepath, not for any length of time. Surely Psi Cops can learn anything they want to know, and thereby stoke the fears of mundanes with the knowledge that even their most private thoughts aren’t necessarily private.

Mundanes are happy to use telepaths for their own purposes, but don’t want them anywhere near, want them isolated, shut out, controlled, when all most telepaths want is to be treated like people, allowed to live their lives in peace.

Instead, they’re hounded, persecuted, given choices that are no choice at all: Join PsiCorps or take the drugs that block their abilities, shut off a vital part of who they are, lock them away in their own minds.

Byron wants something better for his people, a place they can call home.
