Summary: The river sequence, revisited.



The bodies (how many now?) have all been missing one of their hands. Yoru doesn’t have to glance down to feel the dotted line on her wrist, the guideline for where to cut.

Instead, she crouches on the bank of the river and imagines lying in the water, the current carrying her soul away from her body. Death is white: the stark flashes of light as the water ripples in eddies around rocks.

A fish darts, leaping up to break the surface before disappearing again into the shadows of the overhanging trees. Yoru blinks, sits back on the dry earth.
