The eerie silence of the house was doing nothing to lift the pressure of leadership weighing on Buffy’s shoulders.
Sitting with Spike in the dark basement, waiting quietly for the final battle, was the only escape from the feeling that gravity itself was trying to drag her down.
“Some of us won’t make it tomorrow,” she murmured all of a sudden. “You know that, right?”
Spike nodded. “Course. But that doesn’t change anything. I’ll stand beside you, even if the whole bloody world tilts.”
“My whole life, they told me the Slayer stands alone.”
“But we’re gonna change that. Forever.”
