In this universe, Watanuki Kimihiro is a first year student in high school, well-beloved by his professor mother and librarian father, generally well-liked or at least affectionately viewed in class where he flails about and gets into small scrapes and makes bentos with his grandmother to share with fellow students Himawari and, begrudgingly, Doumeki (that bumbling oaf).

It isn’t until a stray football leaps out of the field bounds to smash into his face, shattering his glasses and slicing his eyelid in the process, that this Watanuki lies in his bed at home, bandaged eye seeping, and sees another world.
